Home Sweet Home

I live in the semi arid desert region of West Texas called the Permian Basin. A road trip through our part of the country offers amazing views of the sky – bright golden sunrises and watercolor sunsets so immense that they take your breath away. The land is incredibly flat and sprinkled with mesquite trees, cactus and the occasional wild flower. Breaking the monotony of the landscape, oil wells, pump jacks and wind turbines accent the horizon. Cattle ranches spread far and wide sharing the natural resources that West Texas offers. The birthplace of a U. S. President and the home of "Friday Night Lights," Odessa offers a beauty all it's own. It is a good place to build a life.

WHAT A WEEK!

I live my summer life as a servant to my kids. Almost constantly surrounded by my precious ones, my life is a balance of grandmotherly love and moments of complete insanity. My week in review (in no particular order.) We were awakened by a huge thunder storm. The day was a blast with kids thrilled with the chance to play in rain and puddles. I covered my entire floor with towels to protect my home from the running in and out. At one moment, I looked up to see my almost teenaged grandson bringing me his rainstorm treasure - two hands full of mud and EARTHWORMS. As I "calmly" instructed him to take the critters outside and put them in my garden, ten of his captives escaped into my house. We spent the next few minutes in an earthworm rodeo! Next day.....the rain continued.....my Kielyn opens the front door and begins screaming uncontrollably. Unable to speak, she points to the front door. I see my boys (including my husband) have a lost FERRET cornered on the front porch. Lots of entertainment there. Thankfully, the orphan has been adopted. Enough, you say? Oh no! Day three: the great flood of West Texas continues! My Brennon brings me his new find - a FROG! Yes, worms, ferret, and now a frog. We found a home for him in the swamp that was formerly my garden. A few hours later, we can't find the kids. Kielyn, Brennon, Aubreigh and Cameron - all gone. No foul play suspected, because their bikes were also missing. Into the pickup goes Detective Steve to round up the criminals. First he finds Miss Kielyn - completely alone - knocking on the front door of her friend at the the end of the block - her training wheeled bike parked in the drive way (after Pappa said that she could not go there alone.) An unfortunate spanking resulted. But the other three, where were they? No sign of them in the immediate neighborhood. Steve continued to drive the area. Approximately six blocks away near the country club golf course, he spotted the abandoned bikes. After further investigation, he found and unbelievable sight! All three of the older kids - the ones that you would THINK would THINK before acting impulsively......laying in a rain puddle on the golf course....gleefully covered with water and MUD! After I "calmly" got them all showered and clothes in the washer, they simply could not understand why we invited them to GO HOME WITH THEIR PARENTS!

My grandson is coming for a week this summer. Perhaps I should rethink the whole thing after reading about your adventures.
